I’m going to be so honest right now, there are days I get genuinely annoyed at how dependent we've all become on the internet. A part of me misses the era when a great product and word-of-mouth was enough. If you feel the same way, oh I so get it.
But I have a belief I hold pretty strongly in life and in business: you have to accept things as they are, not as you wish they were.
And right now, the reality is that when someone in your town needs what you offer, the very first thing they do is open Google and type in what they’re looking for.
Not ask a neighbor. Not flip through a directory. Just immediately Google.
(I do it too, so really no shame!)
That's not a complaint. That's just the world we're working with.
So the question isn't whether local business SEO matters. It just does. Full stop. The question is whether your business is showing up when those searches happen.
What does "showing up on Google" actually mean?
When we talk about search engine optimization (SEO) for a small business, we're talking about making sure that when someone types "best plumber in Wadsworth" or "affordable haircuts near Tallmadge" into Google, your name appears in those local search results.
Not buried on page four. Right there, near the top, where people actually look.
Because again, let’s be honest, most people won’t click through multiple pages of search results.
One of the most effective (and underused) tools for improving your Google search ranking? Blog posts.
Yep — a consistent blog filled with the right SEO keywords for small business tells Google exactly who you are, where you are, and who you serve. It signals relevance. And Google rewards relevance.
Why keywords are the thing you can actually control
Remember what I said about accepting reality? Here's the flip side of that: within this system, there are absolutely things you can do. A smart local SEO strategy is one of them.
You can't control Google's algorithm. You can't control what your competitors are spending on ads. But you can consistently publish content that use the exact words and phrases your customers are already typing into that search bar. That's how small businesses get found on Google without a massive ad budget.
Think about it this way: every blog post is a new door into your website. And every well-placed keyword is a sign above that door that says, "Yes! this is exactly what you were looking for."
You don't have to love the game to play it well
You don't have to be an internet fanatic. You don't have to spend every spare minute obsessing over analytics dashboards. (Been there!) But investing a little time each month in your small business search visibility is one of the highest-return moves available to you right now.
The internet isn't going anywhere. But neither is your business.
